"Rainy days are often overlooked by travelers, but the rainfall actually drives baitfish closer to the surface. This brings the dolphins up to hunt and play, with the added benefit of far fewer boats on the bay."
There is a common misconception that the rainy season in Bocas del Toro (typically June-July and November-December) is a time to stay indoors. While the sunshine is beautiful, the rainy season offers a unique, intimate encounter with our resident Bottlenose dolphins that you simply can't get during the dry, crowded months.
Baitfish & Dolphin Activity
Dolphins are active hunters, and their movement patterns are closely tied to their food source. When it rains, the changing surface conditions and fresh water runoffs cause baitfish to swim higher up near the surface. This brings the dolphins up to feed and hunt, making them much more active and visible from the boat.
The Luxury of Silence
The biggest advantage of a rainy day tour is the lack of other boats. During the peak dry season, the bay can get crowded, and the noise of multiple engines can make the dolphins shy. In the rainy season, you often have the entire bay to yourself. This silence allows for a much deeper connection with the animals, witnessing the playful dance of dolphins without the distraction of a dozen other tour groups.
"When it rains, the bay gets quiet. With no other boats around and the dolphins feeding near the surface, you get a much more natural, undisturbed look at how they behave." - Capitán Papito

Common Questions
Will the tour be cancelled if it rains?
Rarely. We only cancel if there are high winds or lightning that make it unsafe to be on the water. A normal tropical rain is perfectly safe and often makes for the best wildlife spotting.
What should I bring for a rainy tour?
A light rain jacket is helpful, but we also provide ponchos. Most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and a dry bag for your camera/phone!
